The Role
Tesla Motors is seeking a Product Support Engineer – Thermal Systems to join our Service Engineering team in Europe. This role is at a key connection point between the needs of the European market base and global development, quality and production teams.
Diagnostic related objectives:
Empower aftersales organizations to be able to more quickly and effectively diagnose when our products are not functioning properly to facilitate appropriate repair or service actions. This is done through enhanced onboard or off-board diagnostic methodologies including vehicle self-tests, CAN data analysis, knowledgebase content, or troubleshooting procedures.
Product Improvement related objectives:
Assist in improving Tesla vehicle thermal and HVAC systems based on field performance and service records of the existing fleet of vehicles. The goals are high reliability, operation according to internal and user expectations, intuitive use, safe, while minimizing cost of manufacturing, servicing and ownership. This role pays special attention to the European market and drives systems improvements through an accurate understanding of European market needs, including unique climatic conditions, road and infrastructure attributes, regulation, or other types of local or regional differences.
Diagnostic Responsibilities
- Debug systems and perform diagnostics on field failures remotely and directly in the field.
- Coordinate with design teams to perform further root cause analysis with component owners where necessary.
- Work with quality, logistics and manufacturing teams to ensure new issues are fully investigated and that countermeasures are in place.
- Regular collaboration with worldwide service teams to ensure consistent and stable global service operations.
- Define requirements for on-board diagnostic methodologies for use in the aftersales world and work with the firmware development team to implement.
- Develop and document troubleshooting and remote diagnosis techniques with technicians, Field Support Engineers and Product Support Engineers.
- Some occasional travel to perform onsite root cause analysis, testing and training is necessary.
Systems Responsibilities
- Review existing and proposed thermal related specifications and assess their impact on current or future Tesla products.
- Bring visibility to development teams by summarizing and distilling existing fleet performance and service trends. Make proposals to engineering design and department leads on the direction Tesla should take.
- Assist with validation of upcoming firmware changes to ensure reliable and performant feature launches.
- Review user experience issues and deficiencies and escalate those to development teams that can be addressed by firmware or hardware improvements and/or revised functional specifications.
- Collaborate tightly with Tesla’s hardware and software teams to ensure efficient and economical implementation and validation of new features, components, and systems.
- Identify improvements for serviceability of the product for the purpose of reducing costs.
- Qualified in CS, CE, EE, ME or similar.
- Several years of experience on products that were in or have since entered production.
- Must be fluent in English (additional foreign languages a plus).
- Advanced understanding of thermal and HVAC systems, including heat pump theory and refrigeration cycle
- F-gas certification a plus
- An awareness of the worldwide EV development status quo as it relates to powertrain technology, specifications, and drive and charge performance.
- Experience with power electronics and high voltage components, including HV battery thermal requirements and controls
- Data acquisition and analysis and processing tools, including one or more programming or scripting languages such as Python and databases
- Able to review electrical schematics, and provide feedback at the hardware, software, or system level
- Understanding of DSPs, microcontrollers, and embedded programming in C/C++
- Knowledge of digital communication and protocols using CAN and Ethernet
