Amazon WorkMail is the secure cloud platform driving individual email and calendaring experiences for the enterprise, and the platform others build their mail and calendaring experiences on. Our message routing and security team makes sure that our customers’ email messages are transferred speedily, that abuse is handled, and creates features to make our mail platform one builders want to build on. If you have ever thought “this seems like a fixable problem” when something about your inbox or calendar bugged you, join WorkMail and help bring those fixes to life.
We are looking for creative and nimble software development engineers to join us in building integrated, resilient systems. But we don’t stop there. In WorkMail, we encourage our engineers to grow by taking on challenges in new dimensions, including switching to teams serving APIs and wire protocols, storage and search, or UIs. We work closely with dependencies inside and outside of WorkMail, so communicating clearly and effectively is key to getting things done at all levels. We don’t ask you to have N years’ experience in foolang, or play trivia games like quoting your favorite RFCs; we want developers who are curious, motivated to take what you already know and use that to learn even more, and who take the initiative to deliver — although it is a nice bonus if you already have an interest in or knowledge of messaging protocols and concepts!
Key job responsibilities
At WorkMail, you will gain a first-class understanding of building for the AWS cloud, because we are a cloud service that is itself built on AWS. You will build a foundation of engineering expertise that you will use for years to come. By practicing operational excellence and building for security, reliability, and the other pillars of the AWS Well-Architected Framework using our internal tools and mechanisms, you learn not just what the best practices are, but why they are — and when to break the rules. Our customers are anyone who uses a mail client to read email or use their calendar, the IT administrators who take care of their needs, and the builders who create innovations in their own products using mailboxes as primitives.
A day in the life
Engineers are on call one out of every six weeks, and during that time, they’re responsible for reviewing, triaging, and resolving incoming tickets, primarily from the systems but also customer case escalations that require deep-dives.
When off-call, you’re involved on sprint work, focusing on one or two big rock deliverables, either features or operational improvements. You might create designs, break down problems for a sprint so teammates can collaborate, propose your own idea and advocate to get it on the roadmap, or mentor someone in learning an aspect of the system or a new skill like building on AWS. We work a lot in Java, C++, and Python. We rely on our CD pipelines, using automated testing, guardrails, and monitoring to help us ship rapidly at a high degree of quality. Like most teams, we do have technical debt, but we make space for operational improvements to get better with every sprint.
About the team
Career growth
At WorkMail, we are opinionated about healthy career trajectories, and enable growth by working with you to calibrate expectations and performance, and identify the stretch opportunities to reach your goals. We help you create networks with activities like 1:1s you can count on, mentoring, and opportunities to work across team boundaries to bring your ideas to life. You will have exposure to senior engineers, including principals, and leaders in the org, to help you learn more and chart your path forward, as well as training, hackathons, cross-team design reviews, opportunities to attend conferences, or even exchanges to other teams or sites.
Return to Office/Remote work
Our team’s return-to-office policy is simple: work in the office when you want, work from home when you want. We ask that you live within a reasonable commute to your assigned office location, so you can come in for infrequent, planned team activities like quarterly All-Hands or special collaboration sessions. Some of the team have chosen to return to office on Fridays to catch up with each other, but it’s up to you. Of course, things may change in the future, since we’re learning as we go, but we are committed to this for the foreseeable future. WorkMail is located in two locations: The Hague, The Netherlands and Arlington, VA, USA, and we have established an overlapping set of working hours when both teams are online so we can schedule team meetings, but travel is not required.
If this sounds appealing, and you’d like to have a voice in making email a great experience, then we would love to meet you!

- Building cloud-native, resilient services
- Building applications that include a mix of client-side and server-side components
