JOB
The Town of Needham seeks highly qualified candidates for the position of Sealer of Weight & Measures. The position will undertake all duties as granted under MGL c.98 §34 enforcing the law pertaining to weighing and measuring devices involved with public sale within the Town of Needham.Hiring range $50 +/- per hour DOQThis is a temporary position to serve through completion of the project. Flexible schedule is available subject to approval of the Building Commissioner. Any agreed upon work schedule greater than 19.5 hours per week on average will end no later than 6 months. Work schedules less than 19.5 hours per week may last longer than 6 months. This appointment is non-benefit eligible.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Performing the adjusting, sealing, testing and condemning of any weighing or measuring devices involved with public sale such as commercial scales and meters, liquid and dry capacity measures, and linear, area, fabric and cordage measuring devices; collect and account for sealing fees;Performing inspections of the following (non-exhaustive): pre-packaged food and merchandise; vendor licenses including monitoring transient vendor, hawker and peddler licenses; gasoline, fuel oil, jet fuel, oil and grease meters to ensure accurate standards of measurement and accurate billing for service stations, garages, homes, bulk fuel farms and large bulk vehicle tanks; taxi meters, including waiting time, standards of measurement and consumer charges; scales in hospitals, drug stores, jewelry stores, garages, warehouses, factories, commercial establishments, vehicle scales, and wholesale and retail outlets to ensure conformance with National Bureau of Standards requirements and tolerances.Document and investigate complaints of short weights, measures and counts, and prepare evidence of such for court action; seize unsealed weighing or measuring devices and those not conforming to legal requirements; issue fines and warnings under MGL Ch.98, Section 29A; prepare annual reports to Massachusetts Division of Standards and Needham Select Board.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of specialized field equivalent to the completion of 4 years of college. Ability to become certified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts within 1 year of appointment as a weights and measures official, unless appointed under Civil Service.Access to reliable transportation to various field locations around Needham community.Ability to consistently carry 50-to-60-pound equipment.Ability to attain 30 hours of approved continuing education every 2 years after receiving initial certification as a weights and measures official.Knowledge of applicable Massachusetts General Laws (MGL), rules and regulations governing established standards pertaining to weights and measures, including MGL, c.98 §42-43; c.94 §181 and c.101.Knowledge of the methods, procedures and legal metrology requirements pertaining to the testing, inspection, certification and accuracy requirements of commercial devices.Exemplary customer service skills representing the Town of Needham professionally, the ability to deal effectively with others, retaining their support and cooperation whenever necessary.Ability to write clear and concise reports regarding inspections and investigations.Working knowledge of all safety requirements pertaining to testing of devices

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
The final candidate shall be appointed and receive compensation as determined by the Select Board. The Sealer of Weights and Measures shall be a part of the Building Department and report to the Building Commissioner.
