Summary:
Performs high quality Nuclear Medicine procedures/therapies on inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room patients, utilizing complex equipment & clinical skills, knowledge, and competencies to identify if pathology exists. Provides seven day per week emergency nuclear medicine coverage (rotational). Provides and maintains radiation safety standards. Participates in ongoing quality assurance/improvement activities.

Essential Functions:
  • Performs direct patient care, utilizing established policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Prepares, assays, and administers radiopharmaceutical doses by injection, inhalation, or ingestion as prescribed.
  • Positions the patient and obtains images, waiting the appropriate length of time following IV administration, acquiring images according to established protocols, immobilizing patient appropriately when necessary, and indicating appropriate anatomic landmarks for each view.
  • Evaluates all images to determine if additional images will optimize the diagnostic value of the procedure. Exhibits sound clinical judgment.
  • Practices good radiation safety procedures pertaining to the preparation, handling, administration, and disposal of radiopharmaceuticals (ALARA).
  • Maintains records of receipt, dispensing and disposal of radioactive materials. Maintain records of equipment quality control, radiation monitoring and surveys.
  • Provides patient education and instruction prior to and after examination. Provides training/education to staff and students as indicated.
  • Operates computer and nuclear medicine equipment for data acquisition, reconstruction and documentation of images and performs quality control measures for the purpose of ensuring optimal quality images.
  • Recognizes and alerts reading physicians of critical findings that needs urgent attention.
  • Performs daily inspections of equipment and reports quality concerns immediately, as well as equipment failures or deficiencies.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly QC on all imaging equipment.
  • Follows good radiation safety, quality assurance and infection control procedures.
  • Knowledge of bloodborne pathogens and universal precautions.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the nuclear medicine machines and associated minor equipment in accordance with infection control policies and procedures.
  • Lifts, moves, transports and positions patients for diagnostic studies.
  • Performs venipuncture for radiopharmaceutical administration, as well as venipuncture for stress echocardiograms, bubble studies, Definity administration and occasional research patients.
  • Administers therapeutic radioisotopes according to the physician’s order including, but not limited to, I-131 Sodium Iodide, Radium-223 Dichloride, and Samarium-153 Lexidronam.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of medications used in nuclear medicine (Lasix, Sincalide, Lugol’s solution) and administers medications according to the physician’s order.
  • Produces the preliminary reports for cardiologist interpretation.
  • Processes cardiac images for cardiologist interpretation.
  • Assists the physician assistant in cardiac stress testing when performed in conjunction with nuclear medicine procedures, including preparing the patient for placement of ECG leads, recognizing and responding to any ECG changes, recognizing the parameters that indicate termination of cardiac stress study, and recognizing ECG patterns that are appropriate for image gating.
  • Performs injections of radiopharmaceuticals and stress agents during stress tests.
  • Participates in quarterly Radiation Safety Meetings.
  • Upholds ICANL accreditation standards.
  • Complies with all continuing education requirements as dictated by regulatory entities.
  • Takes on-call responsibility as scheduled.
  • Performs incidental general office duties including answering phone, scheduling patients for exams, maintaining patient records, and ordering supplies.
  • Utilizes PACS, RIS, and current EMR efficiently and completes required documentation for each examination performed.
  • Performs all duties expected of a CNMT in accordance with SNMMI.

Position Requirements:

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Graduation from an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology training program
  • Current Nuclear Medicine CNMT and/or ARRT(N) Certification or actively pursuing registry as a nuclear medicine technologist
  • Current WA State Radiologic Technologist Certification.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers
Desired:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Medicine
  • One year or more of recent related work experience in the field of nuclear medicine
  • Radiology Technologist RT(R) Certification
  • CT Technologist RT(CT) or NMTCB (CT)

Working Conditions:
  • Requires working as a member of a team, under the direction of the Cardiology and Radiology Manager or Director to ensure efficient operation of the nuclear medicine department.
  • Requires the ability to effectively communicate with other staff, physicians, and patients. Requires working under changing conditions depending on the schedules of the department. Work schedules are variable and may well include evening and weekend hours.
  • Technologists are exposed to ionizing radiation, hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, skin irritants, moderate to heavy stress and pressure (heavy in the case of life-threatening situations). Overtime is moderate but does occur. OSHA regulations require technologists to wear appropriate protective clothing when performing procedures that provide exposure to blood and other bodily substances.
