JOB PURPOSE
The cook is responsible for preparing 2 meals a day and serving the meals to the Sisters Residents
Prepares nutritious and appetizing meals for Sister Residents and guests according to menu and dietary requirements. Provides a clean, safe, and neat environment. At all times, follows kitchen safety guidelines and sanitary regulations. Demonstrates respectful treatment of the dignity, privacy, and individuality of Sister Residents, guests, and co-workers. Incorporates an understanding of Mercy mission and values into work performance.

QUALIFICATIONS Education, Competencies and Experience
To perform the job successfully, an individual should have the following education, competencies, and experience:
Required
- At least one year of related experience in full food service operations experience.
- One year of work cook experience in a non-fast food restaurant, assisted living, or healthcare facility preparing full course meals using recipes.
- Must have a valid Food Handler’s Card.
- Highschool or GED
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule that will include evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Must have a good artistic ability of creating attractive food displays.
- Possesses generalized basic knowledge of the practices, and methods used in the preparation of food and the ability to cook a variety of foods in large quantities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of food services, food handling techniques, preparation and cooking procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of workplace sanitation and safety regulations.
- Possesses the ability to operate the equipment associated with food service preparation.
- Demonstrates the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals in English.
- Possesses the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant it.
- Possesses the ability to accept constructive criticism.
- Possesses the ability to deal tactfully with other co-workers, residents, guests and the general public.
- Must maintain a clean and neat appearance.
- Freedom from illegal use of drugs and freedom from use and effects of use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.
- Successfully complete pre-employment requirements, including a physical, background check, drug test and TB test.
Preferred:
- Food service experience at an assisted living.

Physical Requirements
- Frequent walking, bending, stooping.

- The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Works almost constantly in a standing position.
- Must have ability to operate kitchen equipment as needed.
- Sufficient manual dexterity to safely handle dishes and kitchen equipment.
- Exposure of hands to water, cleaners, and disinfectants.
Environmental Conditions:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration.
- The noise level in the work environment can be very loud.
- Works in a relatively confined kitchen and dish washing room area which may become quite warm.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and recipes.
- Ability to speak effectively before Sister Residents or employees of Sisters of Mercy.
- Ability to comprehend recipes and the alteration of such recipes necessary for large groups.
- Demonstrates the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals in English.
Visual/Audible Acuity Requirements
- Able to speak clearly and be understood while also understanding others using the English language.
- Frequently must be able to read fine print and be able to discriminate color.
- Must be able to distinguish normal sounds with loud background noise.
- The employee is frequently required to taste or smell.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
MUST SHOW PROOF OF BEING FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19.
This is a per diem position with no benefits.
