About us

The mission of the Potter Park Zoological Society is to support Potter Park Zoo and its mission to inspire people to conserve animals in the natural world. We strive to teach each visitor and participant in educational programs what they can do to conserve animals in the natural world – both world wide and in their own backyard.

The Potter Park Zoo Education Department has one full-time temporary opening for a Zookambi Summer Camp Instructor. Instructors work with Education Department staff to plan and deliver summer camp programming on a variety of zoo animal related topics to students in grades 1-7. Duties and tasks may include but are not limited to:

• Develop age appropriate lesson plans relevant to the class topic. These should include hands-on activities, excursions on zoo grounds and games/Nature Play.
• Demonstrate strong classroom management skills in an informal setting.
• Manage camper behavior and communicate with parents if behavior issues arise.
• Make sure supplies and materials for activities/projects are on hand or ordered by staff in a timely manner.
• Maintain a tidy class space and storage room.
• Be responsible for the health, safety and well-being of campers, including adhering to all zoo health and safety protocols
• Evaluate and provide feedback for intern-led lessons.
• Attend any meetings, work days or staff development as required.

Requirements

• Experience working with children in an education setting. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in informal education or at a zoo or nature center.
• Have excellent communication skills and a positive, friendly attitude.
• Must be self-motivated, energetic, adaptable and be able to work on a team.
• Must be able to work inside and outside and tolerate summer weather conditions, most notably heat and humidity.
• Must be available for work from June 10 – June 30 and July 17 – August 11. Note there is a break between units from July 3 to July 14 which may be used as preparation for the second unit beginning July 17.
• Must pass a background check.
• Must have at least 3 references to confirm resume experience. References will be contacted for all candidates.

Further Comments

• Hours during camp will generally be 8:00 AM-4:30 PM during weekdays, with a 30-minute lunch break.
• The pay rate is $14 per hour. Uniform shirts are provided.
• Instructors are paid for up to 80 hours of prep time, to be used at their discretion, as well as time to complete required trainings before camp begins.
• First Aid/CPR certification required. Will train if needed.
