Nature of Work

An Educational Assistant I may be assigned classroom duties which involve a variety of clerical, word processing, computer spreadsheet and data base, typing, duplication and similar tasks in order to relieve a teacher of more routine, day to day classroom duties. An Educational Assistant II provides individual and small group support and personal assistance, often in a standard or special purpose educational program, to students with distinct and exceptional educational needs and challenges as determined by a certificated specialist. A position of this class may be assigned full-time to a student with a physical impairment that requires the employee to assist with school tasks the student cannot perform, such as attending class and taking notes; carrying books; adapting written school materials; personal cleanliness and hygiene; administering medication; setting up or operating specially adapted equipment; food preparation and feeding the student; and assisting the student to communicate with teachers, classmates, and others.
