Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for an
Stations Designer to join our Planning, Engineering, and Construction team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. While this position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote.
What does a Stations Designer do for us?
Under general supervision, this employee will plan, design, and document Station structural systems in accordance with standard Idaho Power Stations Design and Construction processes. They will design the physical components of substation layouts to integrate control, communications, and station apparatus into a safe and reliable system. They will work within project teams to provide design support for Station control and structural projects. They will optimize design time, construction time, and project material costs by using standard modules, C.U. codes, and components. They will take responsibility for each project from scoping through design and provide field support during construction. This includes material selection and delivery arrangements, shop fabrication, field installation, and as-build approvals and records.

REQUIRED SKILLS
Knowledge of:
- Basic knowledge of:
- IP's financial and property accounting systems
- Working knowledge of:
- Station Civil, Structural, Legal descriptions, and easements
- Station design and construction processes and practices
- Drafting principles
- Asset Suite, AutoCad, and AM Meridian software
- Project management processes and practices
- Stations Engineering manual
- Operating principles of electrical power station equipment
- The latest methods, materials, equipment, and current construction practices used in station construction to install station controls, structural, and communications components
- The hazards and safety precautions of electrical power station work
- Station Commissioning practices and procedures
- Company specifications and regulations pertaining to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of station equipment
- Thorough knowledge of:
- Power Systems design
- Operating principles of electrical power station equipment
Skills in:
- Organizing and managing time
- Microsoft Office products such as Word and Excel
- Efficient use of AutoCad, and AM Meridian software
Ability to:
- Read, understand, and prepare station electrical, structural, control, and instrumentation drawings, diagrams, and other documents
- Use good judgment in applying established guidelines to solve work problems
- Perform technical research to solve problems
- Establish and maintain interpersonal and business relationships
- Work independently
- Use judgment and initiative in resolving common problems
- Coordinate and manage Station designs of projects using contracted resources for design and drafting
- Monitor contracted resource expenses
- Manage multiple project designs simultaneously
- Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of problems, findings, and solutions
- Perform concentrated detailed work with a high degree of accuracy
- Develop and analyze alternative solutions to control and structural problems
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Associate's degree in related field
OR
- Completion of a related 2 year vocational/technical training program
OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Experience:
- 2 years of experience in a stations trade that provides experience in station design, station structural construction, instrumentation, control wiring, station protection, operations, or maintenance
OR
- An equivalent combination of appropriate education, experience, or military training that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position.
- Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Completion of designated portions of the Stations Design Training Program. Additional safety related training may be required.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Travel across Idaho Power service area with occasional extended out-of-town stays. Extended hours to meet deadlines.
