Summary

In this position, you will work on an NIH-funded research project examining the health and well-being of persons with substance use disorder in Michigan using an innovative network-based recruitment method. Under supervision, you will recruit, screen and administer interviews. You will also implement the protocol required to screen study respondents on their eligibility and to distribute participant incentives. Responsibilities will also include data collection, setting up study sites as well as the communication with study participants. Data collection sites are located in Wayne, Macomb, Oakland, and St. Clair counties.

The ideal candidate is interested in working with study participants, working with technological devices and data, and participating in a multi-disciplinary research team.

Temporary position, between 10 and 40 hours a week, to be scheduled on weekdays and Saturdays, early mornings as needed.

Who We Are

The Survey Methodology Program (SMP) is a research program within the Survey Research Center (SRC) at the Institute for Social Research (ISR). Since its inception in 1946, SRC has been an important source of innovation in survey research methodology. The SMP is seeking Research Assistants for The Project Positive Attitudes Towards Health (PATH). The overall purpose of the Project PATH is to collect research data from persons with substance use disorder in Michigan using an innovative network-based recruitment method. The project seeks to improve our methodological understanding about ways to collect data from substance users, leading to contributions on understanding about substance use disorder.

Responsibilities*

  • Recruit & screen potential subjects via telephone interactions
  • Schedule research participants and implement informed consent protocols
  • Conduct interviews via face to face and/or virtual interactions
  • Manage subject records and administer participant incentives.
  • Set up study sites (office furniture, tablets, phones, respondent sanitizing supplies)
  • Conduct phone calls with participants to troubleshoot any study issues
  • Participate in weekly team meetings
  • Assist with other study related tasks including mailings, equipment cleaning, data monitoring
  • Comply with Covid-19 protocols

Required Qualifications*

  • Experience working with Human Subjects in a research context
  • Experience with research protocols
  • Experience working in a team-based environment
  • Flexibility in schedule, including weekdays (early mornings) and Saturdays, between 10 and 30 hours per week
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Computer skills - word processing, Google workspace
  • Ability to complete work tasks in offices located in Southeast Michigan (Wayne, Macomb, Oakland and St. Clair counties)
  • Ability to complete a 1 to 2-day training in-person, as required, at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (426 Thompson St., Ann Arbor, MI 48104) and at a data collection site
  • Strong attention to detail

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, social work, or related field
  • Experience working with technological devices
  • Experience working with persons with substance use disorder
