Job description
The NPT Climate Change Program is located in Lapwai, Idaho on the Nez Perce Reservation. Climate Change Staff work within the Department of Natural Resources Water Resources Division on climate change planning. The VISTA Member will report to the Climate Change Coordinator who is responsible assessing and planning for climate change. The NPT has a number of climate change initiatives or climate change related projects that are on-going, but this position would be directly under the Climate Change Planner in the Natural Resources Division. The NPT has a holistic and ecologically based planning ethos, and much of the planning that we are doing involves the well-being of wildlife, plants, and humans. We are looking for a dedicated individual to help build capacity for the NPT CCP through VISTA service. VISTA Members serving the NPT will join a team of tribal employees, who are professionals, that are passionate about community service. We see the value in volunteerism in professional settings as continuing education, career pathway exploration and development, access to mentorship, and growing future leaders. We also believe that hands on training opportunities and service opportunities are critical to help young people understand not only the climate crisis, but climate solutions, and to rapidly build a knowledgeable workforce to confront these issues.
Member Duties : The service will include climate planning, learning about climate change projections, tools, adaptation options, climate mitigation, community-based planning, and tribal climate challenges. The climate team has a number of projects and the VISTA will learn about all of these projects. Climate change affects every ecosystem, and nearly every sector of the economy and the built environment. The climate projects in Water Resources include flood planning, food sovereignty planning, landscape level climate change adaptation planning for species on the move, and mitigation planning. The VISTA will help plan community-based workshops, workshops with tribal leadership and staff, develop surveys, and organize and streamline feedback processes. Professional development workshop and training opportunities are a part of the climate program and are encouraged and supported in this work environment.
