Location: Lansing, MI - State of Michigan Laboratory

Purpose: This position functions as a microbiologist in the Microbiology section performing a variety of conventional and molecular tests for identification of bacterial agents, including Neisseria and Enteric bacterial pathogens. Testing will also be performed to determine antimicrobial resistance in clinical isolates, assist with food pathogen isolation/identification, molecular detection of agents of bioterrorism, and detection of sexually transmitted infections in clinical specimens on a rotational basis.

This position requires knowledge of sterile techniques, laboratory safety, molecular testing practices, and analytical methods. Applicant must successfully complete Select Agent Certification. Preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment is also a required function of this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duty 1-70% of time
  • Performs testing on clinical and environmental specimens for bacterial agents from all over the state of Michigan.
  • Identifies, characterizes, and performs antimicrobial susceptibility on bacterial isolates submitted.

Duty 2-20%
  • On a rotational basis performs nucleic acid amplified testing for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis, N. gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas.

Duty 3-5% of time
  • Follow all quality control and quality assurance procedures that are in place in the microbiology section.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, perform preventive maintenance and documentation, maintain records of reagent and media production, perform, document and file quality control results, prepare non-conforming event reports, and participate in continuing education activities.

Duty 4-5% of time
  • Other work-related duties as required by management such as preparing chemical reagents, inventory supplies, operate, adjust, and maintain testing instruments and equipment.
  • Participate in studies and research activities.
  • Enter, validate, communicate, analyze, and report patient testing data utilizing email, fax phone and the StarLIMS system.

Other Duties
  • Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Sciences.

Experience: At least one year of bench experience in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related clinical laboratory field is preferred. Experience performing real-time PCR and working in a BSL-3 environment are desirable.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: An employee working within the laboratory is required to employ “universal precautions” utilizing personal protective equipment such as nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and lab coats. Requires working for extended periods of time in a Biosafety cabinet (BSC) while wearing a full-length gown, eye protection, N-95 respirator or CAPR, and nitrile gloves. Work requires repetitive pipetting, standing, bending, and lifting (limited to less than 40 pounds). Required to perform testing on highly pathogenic organisms. Works with centrifuges, incubators, water baths, steam autoclaves and other equipment, as necessary.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This person is a key member of the laboratory team. This person also ensures that the needs of the laboratory staff and external clients are met in a timely manner and maintains professional relationships.
