The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is an innovative intergenerational tutoring and mentoring program that links elders with youth in Wake County. Foster Grandparents volunteers receive a living stipend for their volunteer work with at risk and special needs youth. The program provides the elders a means to remain engaged, active members of their communities, putting their life experiences to work. Foster grandparents give children one-on-one attention and support to help them achieve emotional, development and education.
The Foster Grandparent Coordinator is responsible for recruitment and placement of Foster Grandparent volunteers in Wake County Schools and Daycare Centers serving youth. The Coordinator will represent the program in outreach activities, track data for reports and maintain files in accordance with agency and contract guidelines. Attention to detail, good organizational ability, interest in working with older adults, and people skills are essential for this position.
- Recruitment and training of eligible volunteers for volunteer stations for youth at risk and provide meaningful involvement for seniors. Recruitment avenues utilized are public presentations to groups and individuals, tables at events, and listings or articles targeted for publications, newsletters, e-mail, and the Internet.
- Prescreen, orientate, and train volunteers to maximize understanding of program focus, assure confidentiality, promote safety, increase retention, and assure compliance with program/contract/agency guidelines.
- Plan and implement ongoing recognition and retention activities for regional volunteers. Identify community partners for recognition events and provide recognition event for the Foster Grandparents each year.
- Collaborate with other Corporation of National Service (CNS) programs to develop a regional network of volunteer resources.
- Annually gather, review, and summarize volunteer and volunteer station feedback and recommend changes to program manager and advisory council.
- Update the Memorandum of Understanding and other program contracts each year.
- Review FGP plans for appropriateness and serve as a liaison between Foster Grandparent and volunteer station to ensure appropriate training and supervision of volunteers.
- Responsible for supporting and safekeeping a workplace which values a culturally diverse work environment.
- Publicize Foster Grandparent service and results through local media, social media, and program/agency newsletters. Network with program sites and CNS programs to ensure strong working relationships and adequate volunteer coverage.
- Assure timely and accurate documentation of all volunteer/client service information in the database. Inform and report status of the PFI plan to the FGP Advisory Council (AC).
- Assist with the recruitment of FGP Advisory Council (AC) members, provide information to AC for promotion and fundraising purposes, and facilitate station visits for AC members annually.
- Attend city and agency wide meetings as directed.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in business or public administration, urban planning or directly related field and one year of professional neighborhood outreach, citizen participation or community development experience.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
Valid North Carolina Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

- Grant writing and grant and/or program management experience.
Knowledge of:
- Familiarity with non-profit and educational organizations.
- Familiarity with AmeriCorps Seniors program.
- Maintaining strong communications with other team members to maximize relationships, mutual accountability and service integration.
- Communicating information effectively both orally and in writing.
- Utilizing computers and organizational tools.
- Giving presentations and engaging in public speaking.
Positions in this class typically require: standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Light Work:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work, and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light work.
Working Conditions:
Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment.
