POSITION: Fish Culturist I/II

SALARY: Fish Culturist I: $15.78 - 18.30 | Fish Culturist II: $16.98 - 19.68

REPORTS TO: Hatchery Manager

LOCATION: Chief Joseph Hatchery, Bridgeport, WA

Basic Functions: The Fish Culturist I/II performs a variety of tasks primarily focused on the culture and distribution of anadromous fish. Typical duties include the collection, care, and maintenance of brood fish; collection and care of eggs and all phases of fish rearing and distribution. The incumbent monitor’s fish health, inventories live fish, manipulates feed and environmental conditions to encourage optimum growth and development, and administers prescribed treatments. Duties may also include all aspects of facility maintenance, fin marking, PIT tagging, and biological data collection. The Fish Culturist I/II operate and maintain a variety of hatchery equipment and identifies and reports any repair or safety issues to senior hatchery personnel. Incumbents may live in hatchery provided housing if available and be on standby for rapid response to hatchery issues outside of normal duty hours. Standby may be assigned regardless of housing, if management deems it necessary. Additional compensation will be provided for staff assigned standby without housing.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Training:

Fish Culturist I:

  • High school diploma and satisfactory work history, including average or above average attendance.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.

Fish Culturist II:

  • AAS degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or related field, OR;
  • Four years of progressive fish culture experience.

Both:

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be eligible for coverage under the Tribes’ vehicle insurance.
  • In order to advance to a Sr. Fish Culturist, must be able to obtain and maintain a CDL

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of fish hatchery operations and procedures including principles and practices of aquaculture; Columbia River salmon and steelhead species, physiology, habitats, distribution and protection status under Federal and State law; environmental laws regarding hatchery operations including wastewater discharge regulations and permits; proper fish culture techniques in spawning, egg handling, fish rearing, fish stocking, and broodstock management; fish biology, fish physiology, and water chemistry parameters; Federal, State and Tribal Law, Department regulations and policies, and fiscal procedures; fish pathogens, environmental disease and their symptoms; fish genetics and nutritional and environmental requirements of fish; basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide), calculate and understand quantities and proportions; data entry into spreadsheets, basic software and computer operations.
  • Perform physically demanding work in and around deep, cold, moving water in all weather conditions.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Maintain records, collect, and analyze data using a computer and software.
  • Use and maintain hatchery related tools and equipment.
  • Work history must reflect excellent attendance.
  • Must work on projectsindividually and as a team member in a pleasant, efficient and consistent manner.
  • Be self-motivated and work with minimum supervision.
  • Organize and prioritize work to achieve results, goals and objectives in a timely manner.
  • Effectively handle adverse situations, making appropriate decisions, working calmly and accurately.
  • Must be able to swim.
  • Must be able to work safely on boats, barges, catwalks and gangways.
  • Must be in good physical condition and able to repeatedly lift 50 lbs, able to work in inclement weather conditions, on boats, in and around cold, moving water, and over variable, slippery, and rugged terrain with supplies and equipment.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
