Equine Veterinary Assistant
Duties & Responsibilities
- Familiarity with veterinary medical terminology
- Obtain equine patients temperatures, weight and body condition score.
- Collect blood, stool, and other samples.
- Prepare medications, injections, and administer anesthesia.
- Sterilize surgical equipment and instruments.
- Perform inventory of supplies in exam rooms and on vehicles as well as assist with stocking inventory as necessary.
- Keep the mobile units organized and equipped with supplies at all times.
- Prep a patient for surgery.
- Assist with surgery, treatments, and euthanasia.
- Assist with use, set-up and cleaning of diagnostic tools such as X-rays, ultrasound, or gastroscope.
- Clean and organize workspaces including floors and restroom.
- Run routine in-house blood work and prepare blood to be sent to outside labs.
- May be required to wear protective clothing including: boots, gowns, lab coats, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.
Requirements
- MUST have equine handling experience
- Clear and effective communication with your supervisor, coworkers, and clients, using good listening and comprehension skills.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged or challenging situations.
- Valid Oregon drivers license
- High school diploma or GED
- Additional Considerations for Certifications and/or Managerial Experience
Physical Demands:
- Lift 50 pounds unaided
- Effectively restrain animals safely, protecting the assistant, veterinarian, and patient.
- Stand for a long period of time
- Work in a fast-paced environment
- Deal with the emotional demand of being in the presence of critically ill or injured patients and thier owners
- Walk or run with a horse for lameness exams
- Work in occasional extreme temperatures as most work is performed outdoors
- Work extended days as the schedule dictates

- Horse: 2 years (Required)
