THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended.

Supplemental Questionnaire: A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Failure to submit the Application or Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

THE AGENCY

Alameda County General Services Agency (GSA) delivers a host of logistical support services to County agencies and partners from maintenance of facilities and County fleet to energy and environmental management services, capital project management, procurement services, and clean commute and recycling programs. THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to perform a wide variety of remodeling and maintenance tasks on County buildings; and to do related work as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications stated below, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated a track record of success in the following areas:

  • Outstanding technical knowledge, skills, and ability required to assist in the maintenance of buildings including, but not limited to: floor installation and maintenance (i.e., carpet, tile, and vinyl composition tile), roofing maintenance, framing (steel and wood studs), concrete forming, placement, finish and repair, drywall removal and installation, suspended ceiling installation, maintenance and repair, general demolition, and painting.
  • Diligent in the performance of duties resulting in no detail being overlooked.
  • Outstanding commitment to customer service.
  • Effective decision making at a worksite to evaluate safety concerns and identify the best work plan.
  • Dependable and focused on the job at hand.
  • Efficiently organizes tools, materials, supplies for individual assignments and in support of higher level Trades as needed.
  • Effectively assesses problems and identifies the best solution; conducts research if necessary.
  • Adheres to safety procedures and maintains safety awareness for self, co-workers, and customers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

The equivalent of one year of full-time experience in the class of Building Maintenance Worker I in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of two years of full-time experience in the class of Building Maintenance Laborer in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or III

The equivalent of four years of full-time experience in making a variety of repairs to buildings and/or building equipment.


License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds safely.
Must be able and willing to climb ladders and work from scaffolds.
Must be able and willing to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
Must be able to use a respirator.
Must comply with the medical surveillance program related to lead and asbestos, as required by OSHA/Cal-OSHA.
Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

  • Techniques and materials for maintaining and repairing buildings.
  • Common tools, equipment and methods of carpentry, roofing, tile setting and masonry.
  • Basic computer skills including knowledge of Outlook.
  • More advanced techniques in the construction trades such as roofing, concrete, tile setting, etc.

Ability to:

  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Read simple plans.
  • Perform semi-skilled work in a wide variety of maintenance and construction trades.
  • Instruct and directing assigned helpers.
  • Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with employees and the general public.
  • Work independently.
  • Repair and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools, including portable power equipment and the more complex tools.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

The examination will consist of the following steps:

  • A review of candidates' application to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  • The performance examination which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate’s final examination score.
  • SITE Clearance. All employees working in a detention facility must successfully obtain SITE clearance.
