Job description
In accordance with State & Federal regulations, license conditions, the UCLA Radiation Safety Manual, The incumbent serve as the division subject matter expert and lead projects of critical importance to the organization. Responsibilities include assuring that UCLA's Radiation Safety Program is carried out throughout the UCLA campus and the Medical Center in accordance with the Radiation Protection Manual, State, and Federal regulations. Incumbent is the lead person responsible for reviewing program compliance. Streamline and maintain multiple radiation safety functions while providing opportunities for employee growth. Direct supervision of a team of EH&S Technicians. Oversee elements of core programs involving radioisotopes and radiation-producing machines such as inventory, waste, inspection, training, etc. Perform special assignments as directed by the Radiation Safety Officer or his/her designee. Participate in department emergency response efforts.Percentage of Time:

Required/Preferred
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific, or Public Health/Engineering field and four years of professional experience in a radiation protection program, or comprehensive environmental health and safety program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master's degree in an appropriate field of environment, health and safety may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Current health physics experience at a broad scope type A license with working knowledge of present radiation protection standards and recommendations of the International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP) and the National Commission on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP).

Writing skills sufficient to prepare clear, concise, logical, and grammatically correct technical reports, analysis, correspondence, etc. for management, faculty, staff, and regulatory agencies.

Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, research personnel, administrative personnel, and regulatory personnel.
Required
Ability to convey clearly and accurately information to employees safety practices in the handling of sources of ionizing radiation.

Ability to make effective oral presentations at seminars, committee meetings, and technical symposia.
Required
Expert knowledge on the use of radiation detection and measurement instrumentation.
Required
Advanced knowledge of transportation regulations pertaining to radioactive materials for receipt and shipment of radioisotopes.
Required
Skill in supervising technical personnel including delegating, training, and evaluating performance.
Required
Prior working experience in a research and medical environment.
Preferred
Successful completion and possession of the Certified Health Physicist (CHP) examination.
